The project of the Museum on Solovki stated in UNESCO

Совещание по сохранению и развитию Соловецкого архипелага, 2016 год

Russia submitted a revised draft of the Museum on Solovki in the court of UNESCO, announced the Minister of culture Vladimir Medinsky at a meeting on the preservation and development of the Solovki archipelago, held under the chairmanship of The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Cyril.

The background of the issue is that the construction of a larger Museum complex on Solovki archipelago was in process, but at the 40th session of the world heritage Committee of UNESCO, held in Istanbul, it was demanded from Russia “to immediately cease construction, dismantle completed sections of the building and to consider a more suitable design and location of the Museum, and then to submit a report to the world heritage Centre, by 1 December 2016, for consideration.” This was done in July 2015.

The current architectural solution reduced the area of the building by 40%, removed one floor: “Instead of the previously planned three floors with a height of 9.6 m and an area of almost 7 thousand square meters was offered the option of two floors with a height of 7.1 m and an area of 4.8 thousand square meters”, – said the Minister. And now Russia awaits the decision of the international body for the improved design of the Museum.
