New materials and technologies for Russian industry

On June 28, 2016 all-Russian research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM) held III all-Russian scientific-technical conference “the Role of fundamental research in the implementation of Strategic directions of development of materials and technologies of their reprocessing for the period till 2030″(on day of the 84-year anniversary of the Institute). VIAM takes pride of place in the development of new technologies 2012-2015, which was marked by gratitude of the President of the Russian Federation.

Scientists today are working to achieve the functionality of the materials (lightness, resistance to frost etc), optimizing production processes and improving control methods. Implemented a system called “non-destructive testing” – that is, monitoring that does not require removing the object from the operation or dismantling.

There are 18 Strategic directions of development of materials. They include innovative developments of nanostructured intermetallic, intellectual, magnetic, polymer composite materials, etc. the development of energy-efficient, resource-saving, additive technologies, and more. It was encouraging to see the promotion of domestic scientists in innovation, especially in the field of additive technologies.

Report on the implementation of the Strategic directions on the part of VIAM (in part additive technology) did the Director General, doctor of technical Sciences, Professor E. N. Kablov.

Additive technology is a complex of new production processes for the manufacture of parts of complex technical systems, in which the construction of the product occurs by adding (eng. add − add) material, in contrast to traditional technologies where the item is created by method of removing excess.

In his speech he noted that without the creation of corresponding production is difficult to implement this program. “This should work on the technologist, together with the material scientist, mathematician, and programmer,” said Eugene N., stressing the complexity of the approach to solving the problem.

To the development of new materials and the introduction of new technologies was attracted a consortium of companies, the Academy of Sciences (RAS), as well as young scientists of Bauman and the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute.

Today, VIAM is a profitable business. However, its growth is constrained by the taxation system, in which it loses the basis for investment. “Leave us the money. We need money for development. In the Bank we will not go, we know what sort of money,” said E. N. Kablov.

A similar problem rose by Ph. D. Professor M. R. Filonov (MISA): “unfortunately, the money for fundamental research of the Academy of Sciences do”.

The main sources of financing of fundamental research are:

  1. State job;
  2. Subsidies by 220 resolution;
  3. The budget allocated to the leading Universities of the country.

A lot of science supports the Foundation for advanced studies.

“The cost of materials will determine the power of Russia in the middle of the century,” – such conclusion was made by Ph. D. V. Kolodyazhny (JSC “United shipbuilding Corporation”).
